For many conifers enthusiast, Abies koreana ‘Silberlocke’ is where their passion for the plants begin. After seeing the spectacular color and form of the plant, it’s easy to see why it has so many admirers.

It starts with the under sides of the needles that curl upward showing off the brilliant silvery undersides of the needles. The curl of the needles also creates a contrast of the emerald green top side of the needles, and as you move around the tree, these contrasts create an ever-changing prism of light and color.

Abies koreana, Korean fir, are one of the more heat-tolerant firs, growing from zone 4 to zone 7. Abies koreana will also produce cones at a younger age than many other fir trees, which is another spectacular feature because the cones ‘Silberlocke’ will develop will be a rich purple color. Only growing between 3 to 6 inches a year, ‘Silberlocke’ reaches 4 to 6 feet in 10 years allowing it to fit in any garden.

If many gardeners were pressed to answer which conifer was a favorite in their garden, many would answer Abies koreana ‘Silberlocke’, and when you add it to your landscape, you will feel the same.
